Software and AI

Software and AI for UK statutory accounts

Software for UK statutory accounts turns a trial balance into accounts in the Companies Act formats, applies the size rules and drafts the notes. AI is useful for mapping accounts and drafting text, but the amounts should come from fixed calculations and the directors review and approve everything they sign.

What good statutory accounts software does

  • Applies the company size rules, including the thresholds for financial years beginning on or after 6 April 2025 and the two-year rule.
  • Uses the Companies Act balance sheet and profit and loss formats and the framework that fits the size: FRS 105, FRS 102 Section 1A or full FRS 102.
  • Keeps every amount in the notes linked to the statements, so a late adjustment flows through.
  • Shows who changed what and who approved it.
  • Produces what you file: from 1 April 2028 Companies House accepts accounts only in iXBRL from commercial software, and HMRC has accepted Company Tax Returns only through commercial software since 31 March 2026.

Where AI helps, and where it does not

AI is good at suggesting which line item a nominal account belongs to and at drafting the wording of notes and reports from the company's facts. It should not invent amounts: totals, tax and comparatives belong to deterministic calculations that give the same answer every time. Judgements such as going concern, provisions and post-balance sheet events stay with the directors, who approve and sign the accounts.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI prepare statutory accounts on its own?

It can draft them, but not approve them. The directors are responsible for the accounts they approve and sign, so every AI suggestion needs a human review.

Do I need software to file accounts at Companies House?

Not yet for every company: online and paper filing remain until 31 March 2028. From 1 April 2028 all accounts must be filed through commercial software in iXBRL.

Do I need software to file a Corporation Tax return?

Yes. Since HMRC closed its free filing service on 31 March 2026, returns are filed with commercial software, by the company or its agent.
